Kennon builds safer aircraft covers and builds Sheridan’s economy

June 23rd, 2007 Posted in Technology News

Kennon Aircraft Covers, dba Kennon Products, Inc., designs and manufactures protective coverings for airplanes, helicopters and similar platforms. Our flagship product is the Kennon SunShield which keeps sunlight from entering the cockpits of aircraft, keeping the internal contents much cooler in sunlight, and warmer through the night.

Kennon also produces coverings for all manner of cockpits, wings, tails, engines, etc. to protect against environmental hazards and conditions. Much of our work is for private aviation. A growing portion of our business comes from the U.S. military, where we protect something on nearly every flying military platform in the deserts of the Middle East, and throughout the world.

Kennon moved from the Los Angeles area to Sheridan, Wyoming in 1991, for quality of life reasons. Manufacturing and living in Sheridan has proven to be an awesome choice.

R&D and future directions for Kennon

Kennon regularly designs new and improved coverings for aircraft. Often, we do this on site, as part of a custom fitting and design process. Knowledge and use of modern materials provides a means for us to provide safer, longer lasting protective covers. Development of customized and special needs coverings is a business growth strategy.

Kennon utilizes the Wyoming Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program (an associate of the to gain funding to help develop new technologies. To this end we work and team with universities and other companies to bring new solutions more quickly to the market. (For more SBIR info click here.)

Currently we are working on an improved internal insulation system for Navy’s V-22 tilt rotor aircraft. The improvements will produce insulation which is warmer/cooler through innovative management of heat and light, more durable, lighter, chemically resistant, and potentially even bullet proof. Kennon is teaming with the University of Wyoming and Auburn University in this project, in addition to several private sector partners.

Kennon is also proposing an advanced covering system for Navy air cushion vehicles (LCAC/JMAC). These craft travel from ship to shore over rough seas to marshes and beachheads. A protective covering system which can be readily deployed in this highly challenging operational environment is desired. Kennon is teaming with the University of Wyoming and Auburn University and several private sector partners in this endeavor.

Kennon employs a teaming model for developing innovations; teaming with experts allows the various participants to contribute their talents and facilities most effectively.
